A Sugar Showdown: Which Pie to Pick?
Thanksgiving is here and that means a cornucopia of food, including plenty of sweets, like pie! While you might have a favorite pie (who doesn’t?), the truth is not all pies are created equal. If you’re worried about consuming too much sugar this season, take a peek at our pie chart (get it?) for a breakdown per pie.
Sugar by the Slice
The worst offenders for the highest sugar content are the classics: pecan and pumpkin. These two share 29 total grams.
Pumpkin, unlike pecan, only has 15 grams of added sugar, only half of pecan’s added 30!
The pie with the next least amount of sugar is apple pie. The fruit that keeps the doctor away may just be the pie that requires a trip to the dentist, with its 23 total grams.
The next two are blueberry and sweet potato coming in at 15 total grams and 13 total grams, respectively. Blueberry is always delicious and less sugary option than apple pie. For a taste similar to pumpkin pie with half the sugar content, reach for some sweet potato pie.
Finally, the pie with the least amount of sugar?
Presenting peach pie with a mere 9 total grams of sugar!
Sure, this pie may feature a more summery taste, but that does not mean it isn’t welcome at the Thanksgiving table.
When it comes to picking a pie this Thanksgiving, if there is a peach, sweet potato, or blueberry option, perhaps choose that over the pumpkin or pecan. If you just cannot resist, go ahead and indulge — it’s Thanksgiving, after all!
